Master/Slave Advertisement

On a 10BASE-T1L link, a local node and its remote link partner

advertise their role capabilities whether they can operate as master,

slave, prefer master, or prefer slave.

Each of the ADIN2111 PHYs provides the following functions:

Master/slave configuration advertisement

►

Forced master/slave configuration advertisement

►

Read link partner master/slave configuration

Master/Slave Configuration Advertisement

For each of the ADIN2111 PHYs, the master/slave configuration

tisement register, Bits[31:16] (AN_ADV_ABILITY_M) is used to

configure the PHY to advertise its master/slave configuration. Note

that this bit is reset to the default role of each PHY after power-up,

hardware reset, or software reset (PHY 1 = prefer master, PHY 2 =

prefer slave). See the Master/Slave Configuration section for more

details on the master/slave configuration.

Forced Master/Slave Configuration

Each of the ADIN2111 PHYs can be forced to operate as a master

(or slave). Forced configuration must be used with caution because

a configuration fault can occur if the link partner is also set in

forced mode as a master (or slave), resulting in autonegotiation

failure. The ADIN2111 can be forced to operate as a master or

slave on each PHY using the force master/slave configuration

advertisement register, Bits[15:0] (AN_ADV_ABILITY_L).

Read Link Partner Master/Slave Configuration

The link partner advertised master/slave setting can be read using

the following bits on each of the ADIN2111 PHYs:

AN_LP_ADV_FORCE_MS: link partner force master/slave con-

figuration register bit

►

AN_LP_ADV_MST: link partner master/slave configuration regis-

ter bit

These bits update during the autonegotiation process and are valid

when the autonegotiation complete register bit (AN_COMPLETE) in

the BASE-T1 autonegotiation status register is set on the respective

PHY.

Master/Slave Resolution

The master/slave resolution between a local PHY and its remote

link partner can be predefined or defined during autonegotiation.

When using autonegotiation, the internal logic determines the roles

so only one master is present on the link.

Each of the ADIN2111 PHYs provides the following functions:

Master/slave configuration resolution result

►

Autonegotiation complete status bit

Determination of Master/Slave Configuration

On a 10BASE-T1L link, when the local and remote PHYs have the

same preferred configuration (for example, both slave or both mas-

ter), autonegotiation randomly assigns compatible configurations

to the local and remote PHYs. When one PHY has a forced

configuration, its master/slave configuration is given priority over a

PHY with a preferred setting.

Master/Slave Configuration Resolution

For each of the ADIN2111 PHYs, the master/slave configuration

defined by autonegotiation can be checked using the master/slave

resolution result register bits (AN_MS_CONFIG_RSLTN) in the ex-

tra autonegotiation status register. The bits indicate if the respective

PHY is configured as master or slave, or if there is a configuration

fault.

These bits update during the autonegotiation process and are valid

when the autonegotiation complete register bit (AN_COMPLETE) in

the BASE-T1 autonegotiation status register (AN_STATUS) is set

on the respective PHY.
